Climate change affects fishing and fishes in India,
Like plants moving to higher altitudes to evade effects of global warming, certain fish species, which were recorded only in Kerala too have moved northwards.
The species were recently found in West Bengal.
Interestingly, the inland fish breeding season seems to have undergone the change. Earlier, July was the breeding season which has advanced to February now.
Climate change has major impact on fisheries sector. Top policy-makers and scientists of the country today echoed similar feelings while deliberating at the two-day National Consultation of State Fisheries Ministers which began today.
In fact, impact of global warming on fisheries sector could be gauged from a rising sea surface temperature. From a 28-28.5 degree Celsius range between 1961 and 1976, the surface temperature over Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and the contiguous Indian Ocean has risen to 29.5 degree Celsius in 1997-2005 period.
The gradual increase in temperature could have had a critical effect on marine fisheries which calls for a detailed study.
According to Union Minister of Agriculture, Food and Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Sharad Pawar, the possible impact of climate change on fisheries sector needs to be studied thoroughly. Appropriate measures to overcome the challenges should be brought out in a comprehensive manner, he said.
Stressing the need for increasing fish production, Pawar said the scope is enormous through freshwater aquaculture.
Just 40 per cent of available cultivable water area under aquaculture gives about 3.22 million tonne fish annually with a productivity of 2.5 tonne. By raising the productivity and coverage area, its projected total production from freshwater aquaculture could go up to 5.3 million in the next five years. Pawar called upon all states to bring in more and more waterbodies under aquaculture practices with scientific management.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik echoed similar feelings about the impact of climate change on fisheries sector and called for protection of livelihood of fisherfolks in the emerging situation.
Citing the conflict situation that has arisen among fishermen because of a ban on fishing due to conservation of Olive Ridley turtles, Naveen said the issue needs greater attention in the national sphere.
Pawar agreed that the livelihood of coastal fishing community plays a greater role in the successful implementation of any marine management measures.
Lack of economic security often leads to indiscriminate harvest of resources resulting in irreparable damage to the sector, he added.
Secretary of the Department of Agriculture Research and Education and ICAR Director-General Mangala Rai expressed concern over absence of seed quality control and a supply system.
Seed research facility is absent in India while the issue of land lease is a grave problem which needs attention.
Among others, Minister of State for Agriculture KV Thomas, ICAR Deputy DG S Ayyappan spoke. State fisheries ministers, scientists and secretaries attended the meet which will continue on Sunday.
